Silicon Valley Getting Greener?

September 7th, 2007

A recent EPA report estimated that US data centres consumed around 61bn kilowatt hours in 2006 at a cost of about $4.5bn. That’s about 1.5% of total US electricity consumption, more than the electricity used by all American TV sets, or equivalent to the output of about 15 typical power plants.

That’s alot of power.

Just today, Hewlett Packard, along with 80 other companies, have banded together to reduct the cost and energy it takes to run larger server farms. How about Google too?

In my personal opinion, this is a brilliant marketing move by the aforementioned. A recent study by Ipsos, a research company, has indicated that a large number of consumers would be more inclined to buying products from earth-friendly businesses.

I know I would.

How about you
