We Got Cable Today

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

So, Fry’s Electronics, my most favorite store in the whole wide world, had some Comcast cronies outside of their Palo Alto store on Black Friday. There weren’t many people there, and I was pretty surprised to find it relatively deserted, except for some angry customers trying to haggle lower deals. (I later found out that this was because all of the good sales had been cleared out at 10 am.)

Basically it was installed today by some more Comcast contracted cronies, who clomped around our attic and complained about the menagerie of wires sprawled in the crawlspace. We are starting with a bundle which includes my favorite channels that I had previously experienced only on vacations (where we would sit around the set).

Yes: SciFi, History, Discovery (with Battlestar Galactica, Modern Marvels, and Mythbusters, respectively). I can now be a nerd. On my couch, versus in my bed with my laptop.

Bye Bye Hulu. It was nice being friends. I think Shakespeare said it best: “I wish thou dead.” or.

My love is as a fever, longing still
For that which longer nurseth the disease,
Feeding on that which doth preserve the ill,
The uncertain sickly appetite to please.
My reason, the physician to my love,
Angry that his prescriptions are not kept,
Hath left me, and I desperate now approve
Desire is death, which physic did except.
Past cure I am, now reason is past care,
And frantic-mad with evermore unrest;
My thoughts and my discourse as madmen’s are,
At random from the truth vainly express’d;
For I have sworn thee fair and thought thee bright,
Who art as black as hell, as dark as night.

We can still be friends.

Watch Internet Video Untainted By Obtrusive Ads

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Some of you might have heard about Google’s move to place ads on YouTube. Although reports about mandatory pre roll advertisements have been discredited, I am still opposed to any mandatory ads on my internet TV “network”. This revenue model just alienates viewers like me, and hence many of us disenfranchised viewers might be searching for some additional sites.

You are in luck, as I have foreseen this problem, and decided to compile a selection of alternative, relatively unscathed video sites.

As some of you know, I read. Alot. I was thinking that alot of people would probably be looking for a good summer read, or a good series of summer reads, so I compiled this legit list. I hope you enjoy yourself, cuddling up with a good copy of Understanding the Linux Kernel.

HOWTO: Dump iTunes for An Open Source Upgrade

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

I really hate iTunes. I love open source. You might ask, “What is open source?”

Source that is open means that the code that runs a program is available to the people. Some examples are Firefox, Azureus (Bittorrent client with headquarters in Palo Alto), and Audacity (free music editing software).

Why is this good? The Rationale Is: “We require access to un-obfuscated source code because you can’t evolve programs without modifying them. Since open source’s purpose is to make evolution easy, we require that modification be made easy.”

I got rid of iTunes a time ago.

Last night, I went to go see SiCKO. It was both extremely hilarious and extremely moving . However, I can not illustrate my satisfaction with this movie in a post. I have to list. (If you haven’t noticed, lists with multiples of 3 are my most popular.)
